About Me
Artist Statement
Laura has recently completed her BA (Hons) in Applied Arts at the North Wales school of Art and Design, Glyndwr University.
Laura has experience with glass, large metal work, jewellery and ceramics. She has been developing work inspired by ocean life and is now concentrating on working with forged metal and ceramics. Laura makes large sculptures for external installation.
Concepts and Ideas
Laura captures the lines, shapes and forms of sea creatures and showcases them in her unique style. Laura continuously strives to portray movement and animation in her work.
Processes and Techniques
Laura’s latest range of work is made of two separate components:
For the ceramic body, Laura has used slip casting. Laura decided early into this body of work that she would use porcelain as she liked the way the glazes worked on a white surface.
The legs of her outdoor sculptures have been made from steel which Laura has forged herself. Laura started forging metal in 2007 for a previous sea inspired unit of work. Now she is using bars of steel as long as two metres to support her ceramic pieces.
Laura wanted these steel legs to support and elevate the ceramic body so that the pieces would be free standing.
Future Aims
Now that Laura has completed her degree, she plans to carry on making similar work. Laura’s work was on display in London at the beginning of July at New Designers and her work can currently be seen at the Sea Quarium in Rhyl.
Eventually, Laura hopes to set up her own forge and be able to make even bigger outdoor installations. Laura also helps local wood firing artist Wayne Clarke so is making some small ceramic functional pieces.
